The course syllabus serves as the contract between the student and the college and provides essential information about the course content, expected learning outcomes, grading, class activities and assignments, and other important information about what is expected over the duration of the semester.

It provides students with clear expectations of what will happen in the class and why.

The learning outcomes section provides statements that show the connections between the course, the student's program, and the core curriculum.

Course learning outcomes provide students and instructors the rationale for learning activities and assessments.

For example, since one of the main focal points of ENG 101 (Composition I) is effective written communication, the course learning outcomes reflect activities that support this goal and are the basis for the course assignments and activities (a. to show progress toward the goal and feedback that enables the student to improve, b. to measure the effectiveness of the course, at the end of the semester, at meeting these goals)
